Monaco boss Niko Kovac has reiterated that Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru has an important role to play in his team this season.
Onyekuru joined the club last season from Everton, but he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Turkish outfit Galatasaray.
Kovac however recalled the player and made it clear, he’s banking on him for the new French Ligue one season, which kicked off last weekend.
Monaco was held to a disappointing 2-2 draw at the Stade Louis II by Stade Reims on Sunday, with Onyekuru hauled off after just 45 minutes.
After replacing him with Sofian Diop, Kovac said, Onyekuru remains part of his plans going forward and he’s happy to have him in the squad.
“Henry Onyekuru is an important player in the squad, having only been with us for two weeks. As you have seen, Sofiane Diop made a good appearance off the bench. I’m happy with both players,” Kovac told a news conference after the game.
“We have a very young bench, we have to take the time to get all of our players on the pitch,” he said.
Onyekuru will be hoping to return to the starting line up against when Monaco travel to Metz for their next game.
