One of the oldest academic institutions in Nigeria which metamorphosed from teachers training school to a university status, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education has said that it will implement and maintain all National Universities Commission’s guidelines in her transformation programmes.

The university also revealed that in the cause of full transition from College of Education to University of Education, all the staff by their grade levels would be affected downwards to meet the necessary university academic standards globally.

This perhaps accounted for why a section of the public perceived the strict implementation of the university guidelines as demotion and capable of brewing tension on campus.

Addressing journalists in the university campus Owerri, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities Dr Mrs Jovita Ogu, stated that the National Universities Commission’s set of rules regulate assessment, evaluation and placement processes of both academic and non teaching staff of the university.

Dr Ogu added that an academic staff in a college of education system hardly retains same rank on transition to a university system.

This according to her, explains why a Chief Lecturer in the college has been re-designated to a lower rank pending the outcome of the assessment and no university staff would be exempted.

The University ASUU Chairperson, Dr Ogu flanked by other university staff Unions moved a vote of confidence on the Ag. University Vice Chancellor Professor Stella Ngozi Lemchi for exhibiting capacity in ensuring a seamless transition process of the university and welfare of the university staffers.
