Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard has disclosed that he told midfielder, Mateo Kovacic that he needed to score more goals for the club before the Croatian international finally broke his duck during the Blues’ 2-2 draw against Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Lampard also said that he was delighted for Kovacic and hoped his strike against Valencia will be a starting point for him.

Carlos Soler broke the deadlock, before Mateo Kovacic made it 1-1 just before half-time.

Chelsea appeared on course for victory as Christian Pulisic gave them the lead and Kepa Arrizabalaga saved Daniel Parejo’s penalty, but Dane Wass grabbed a fortuitous equaliser for the hosts at the death.

“We’ve had a lot of jokes between me and him [Kovacic] and the whole squad and him because he’s a player of such quality that should score more goals,” Lampard said in his post-match press conference after the match.

“It’s a project for me, for him and the whole staff to get him more goals and he could have scored two today.

“I’m delighted for him and I hope that’s the start of something new.”
